To announce that the production has started for the much-awaited live-action adaptation of “Mulan,” Disney has released our first look at Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, as the titular Disney Princess!
Looking for the right actress to play “Mulan” was a huge feat, having interviewed around 1,000 candidates for the role. It was first announced November last year that Crystal Liu would be taking the lead role. She previously starred in “The Forbidden Kingdom” and “The Assassins.”
The live-action adaptation is directed by Niki Caro, known for films like 2005’s “North Country” and more recently “The Zookeeper’s Wife.”
Joining Liu is Jet Li as the emperor of China. Jet Li has lately made the headlines after a photo of him being “unrecognizable” and “ill” went viral on social media. He addressed his fans through his Facebook Page that he is “doing and feeling great.” Jet Li was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, a condition that can cause fatigue and weight loss.
Joining Yifie and Li are Gong Li, Donnie Yen, and Yoson An/ The cast also includes Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, and Chum Ehelepola.
Producing the movie are Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner. Serving as executive producers are Barrie M. Osborne, Bill Kong, and Tim Coddington.
Production has officially started on Monday. Filming locations will be in China and New Zealand. The initial release date is set on March 27, 2020.
